There are some great women in this picture – my grandmother (in the back), my favourite aunt Thea to the left, my Mama as a child and my aunt Klaerchen, an excellent seamstress, on the right. Tante Thea always had wise things to say, like “Food keeps body and soul together” and (about people) “Just be good to one another”. One of her greatest worries was that the people she cared about were hungry, that was something she just couldn’t have, and whenever I would come for a visit, the minute I entered her house she would have something delicious to eat on the table. A fantastic cook she was, just like my grandmother too – I still miss both their cakes and stews, and all their gentleness in general.
My grandmother and aunts are all long gone, but they will always have a place in my heart – and now on this very page :o) x
